true riches

The New York Times had an article about a massage therapist , Bonnie Brown, who was hired by Google in their early days. She was paid $450/week plus stock options (which she thought were worthless). After five years of massaging engineers' backs, Bonnie retired, cashing in most of her stock options which were worth millions. She has written a book, "Giggle: How I Got Lucky Massaging Google." She has traveled internationally to oversee the charitable foundation that she started with her Google wealth. It's possible to read this story and think that such a thing only happens with a "lucky" few.

But the Apostle Paul in the book of Ephesians reminds us that in Christ, "we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding . . . .in him we were chosen." Early in chapter one, Paul says that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Peter writes, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is read to be revealed in the last time.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
        Though you have not seen him, you love him;
            and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him
        and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

I don't know Bonnie Brown, Google multimillionaire who is giggling about her google wealth.  What I do know is that her wealth cannot buy her happiness, nor guarantee her health, nor restore her relationship with God. She was in the right spot at the right time but her "luck" is only available to a few.

The riches of life in God are available to all who claim it in Jesus and are willing to live in that reality.

About Bonnie Brown and Giigle

I highly recommend that you and others read this book by Bonnie Brown. She dedicates a chapter to the pursuit of "giving your life away" for all the right reasons. She makes it very clear that she can never depend on her money, and that God is her only source of strength. Here's a quote from the book:

"It took about eighteen months for me to adjust to retirement and independent wealth. One day I sat down and had a long talk with God about the whole situation. I had lived most of my adult life by trusting in God to meet my needs. This money in the bank had robbed me of that dependence. That day God showed me a way to continue trusting my life to Him. Instead of relying on Him for my next meal, I had to rely on Him for my next move. Every day, when I wake up, I trust my day to His direction. I have no goals, purpose, or agenda planned out for my life anymore. He shows me on a daily basis how to spend my twenty-four hours. It is a new concept for me, but has proven to be perfect. I can once again say that I am the proud owner of everything that can’t be bought."

That is so beautiful. How many millionaires wake up every day and say that?
